DPIIT recognition is separate from incorporation. An entity must first exist in an eligible legal form and then demonstrate that it meets the current startup definition. Recognition is not automatic merely because a business is new.

Prepare before applying
1. Confirm the entity type, incorporation date and turnover against the latest definition.
2. Confirm the entity was not formed by splitting or reconstructing an existing business.
3. Write a concise problem statement, solution, innovation or improvement, scalability case and employment or wealth-creation potential.
4. Gather the incorporation or registration certificate, entity PAN, director or partner details and authorisation or digital signature required by the portal.
5. Prepare supporting evidence such as a pitch deck, product link, prototype video, customer evidence, patents or technical note where relevant.

Application steps
1. Open the official Startup India recognition page and follow the current link to the National Single Window System.
2. Create or sign in to the NSWS investor account.
3. Add Registration as a Startup under Central Approvals.
4. Complete entity, sector, promoter and innovation details accurately.
5. Upload supporting documents and submit the declarations.
6. Monitor the dashboard for queries, respond with specific evidence and download the recognition certificate after approval.

Important distinctions
Recognition may provide access to selected facilitation and benefits, but each benefit has its own conditions. Tax exemption under section 80-IAC requires a separate application and is not granted merely by receiving recognition. Keep profile data and certificates updated when authorised details change.
